Now we just have to think about what our next adventure will be and know we will be using them. Bartel is an excellent tour manager, calm and reassuring and always willing to help. And Jorge made the time on the ship a whole lot of fun! Every single Gate One representative and contractor was exceptional! I am a 30 year travel industry retiree (travel agency owner, airline airport operations supervisor), I know a good solid product when I see it. We have a Danube River Cruise booked for next year and I am looking into booking a River Cruise as a retirement gift for my brother.
Why Gate 1 Travel Is the River Cruise Line for You
Kate our tour director/cruise director was wonderful. She was highly organized, friendly and had a wonderful sense of humor. I am quite certain that some days she felt like she was herding cats, but she was ALWAYS so caring and kind. Amsterdam is a beautiful, vibrant city. The whole river cruise was wonderful, and they are always feeding you so much great food and drinks!! Our favorite cities on the cruise were Cologne and Speyer Germany and Strasbourg France.

All escorted excursions use audio headsets that are provided in every cabin. There are 64 good-sized standard cabins and eight suites and although the majority has French balconies, there are no staterooms with walkout balconies. The beautiful medieval town of Miltenberg, with its 14th-century hilltop castle of the same name, is one of the Main River’s true treasures. Its narrow, crooked streets lead to half-timbered houses and are a pleasure to explore.
Other Gate 1 Travel Reviews
Wertheim, too, boasts a hillside fortification, this one of stunning red sandstone. Taken together, these tiny riverside villages remind travelers of the depth of history that has unfolded on these riverbanks. Castles such as these once collected tolls from cargo ships and defended the sovereignty of kingdoms.
Tour Operator
Each day a large proportion of the cruise director's talk is a detailed rundown of the next day's itinerary, which often features up to two included tours per day. On other lines that include several excursions per day, you often end up "paying" for shore tours that you never take, maybe because you don't want to go or simply want to stay onboard and take a nap. Gate 1 Travel offers one daily excursion, plus optional trips if you want to up the pace and see more. There are usually four of these per weeklong cruise and they can be booked in advance at a 10 percent discount or booked once onboard. River cruises aren't known for their onboard entertainment, which is generally pretty low-key and confined to a one-man-band resident musician and singer.

Gate 1 & Viking River Cruises Are Both Squarely Aimed at the English-speaking Market
Comfortable walking shoes are an absolute must. Some religious sites may require modest dress to enter (no shorts, short skirts or skimpy, sleeveless tops). The onboard vibe during the daytime is very relaxed and casual. Most people change for dinner and wear something a little smarter, but jeans and casual tops are perfectly acceptable. At the final night captain's gala dinner, most men wore collared shirts -- some with jackets and ties -- with dresses, skirts, pants and elegant tops for the ladies. Both Gate 1 and Viking River Cruises include daily shore excursions in their fares, which are typically guided walking tours around town and motorcoach trips to visit castles and sites of interest.
She entertained us with history and jokes on the bus ride to and from Salzburg. During the tour of the city she provided interesting details about the making of Sound of Music movie in Salzburg. She had our group singing the Do Re Mi song on the steps of the Mirabell Palace. She made Salzburg come alive for us with a memory we will never forget.
The deluxe MS Monarch Empress is Gate 1's first privately owned river cruise ship. Cabins range in size from 140 to 210 square feet and include large bathrooms and most rooms offer French balconies. The ship is designed with the view in mind, with large windows in the cabins, dining room, lounge, and other public space – and with few exterior visual obstructions on the outside decks.
I really enjoyed his commentary and his daily updates. They gave top notch service, always there to help. We had two wonderful nights of entertainment from outside the ship. The evening games and talent night were also outstanding. All of the tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. I was very impressed with the punctuality of the group.
If you fancy a tipple at lunchtime, you will have to pay because complimentary beverages are only served at dinner. Another area where the line saves money is with its bottled water. On other lines, you will be handed a free bottle of water when you set out on excursions. This was the first time my husband and I have booked travel through Gate 1. It was at the recommendation of our dear friends, who traveled with you previously and said you were the best. We just completed a Rhine River cruise, and it was spectacular and life-changing!
The cruise could not reach its final destination, Regensburg, because of some heavy rains which caused the Danube to rise. Nevertheless on extremely short notice there was little inconvenience to us and our fellow passengers. The Captain, crew, service, food and staff on this ship were outstanding. The accommodations were much better than anticipated. The Cruise Director and Activities Director Soma and Daniella were a credit to whomever hired them.
